Visualizing Sustainability at Nationaal Sustainability Congres 2024

On a crisp November day in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, DartDesign participated as a partner in the Nationaal Sustainability Congres (NSC), the world’s longest-running sustainability conference. The event was held at Congrescentrum 1931, a venue distinguished by its Golden Green Key certification, denoting a commitment to sustainability in the hospitality sector. The perfect setting – therefore – for a day exploring the theme: “Beyond the limits of legislation and regulation to real impact in harmony.”

Moving Towards Concrete Tools
During the plenary opening moderated by Jeroen Smit, we quickly address familiar but nonetheless true cliches that often surface when delving into this theme: the climate crisis is urgent, we do not have much time, it takes all of us, and although recent (geo)political developments may seem like setbacks, we must remain optimistic and push forward. Nothing new for anyone attending, so this leaves the rest of the day to talk specifics: what tools are we actually employing to achieve real impact and how do we help each other?

Different angles are presented throughout the day. From system transformation, where companies and governments start treating carbon emissions as they do money, to putting CEOs of major polluting companies behind bars through criminal proceedings, to simply planting a hedge and stimulating biodiversity in your own backyard. Attendees notably warm up at the idea of discussing the concrete possibilities.

Enabling Sustainability through Design
As partner at the event, we had the opportunity to contribute to the dialogue. In a creative session hosted by our Head of Brand, Stephan Reschke, attendees reflected on the role of design as a piece of the puzzle in driving sustainability impact – seeing design not as a standalone solution, but as a powerful enabler when paired with purposeful action. Without message and actions, design is just a graphic. But confident, relatable and lively design ensures your message and actions come across. Showing inspiring examples of thoughtful decision-making in form, color, typography, layout, imagery, and motion, Stephan demonstrated how design can effectively bridge a gap between data and action, turning complex sustainability metrics into compelling, accessible narratives.

Our presence at the conference affirmed our conviction to use design to do just that. We see our clients’ reporting obligations as an opportunity to compellingly convey their efforts. Going beyond regulations and being confident, transparent, and engaging in the way they present their sustainability activities. This approach aligns with the core question raised throughout the day: what tools do we have and how do we help each other? For us, connecting with others who share this commitment was both a privilege and a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when working together.
